BDC Recognizes Women EntrepreneursMay 10, 1989

Newpaper Article:  Whitby Business Gal Gets Ontario Appointment

Whitby entrepreneur Rosalie Fabricius has been named to the Federal Business Development Bank's (FBDB) women entrepreneurs from throughout the province.

The role of the committee is to examine the concerns, needs and unique challenges faced by women starting or running their own small or medium-sized businesses.  They are to provide recommendations to FBDB on how the bank can better serve women entrepreneurs.  According to 1986 Statistics Canada figures there has been a 20% increase in the number of women business owners since 1981.  This is five times the 4% increase in the number of male business owners in the same period.

Businesswoman Fabricius is the owner and operator of North American Steel Equipment Co., a manufacturer of pallet racking, shelving, work benches and clothes lockers. She purchased the company 14 years ago when it was bankrupt. She turned it around. This year the company expects to have $10 million in sales.  When asked to what she would attribute her success she says: "I have been fortunate to recruit the right people and to manage them well. The quality of your staff is crucial to the success of your business."

The FBDB Women Entrepreneurs Committee will be addressing the issue of financing, venture capital, information, training and counselling among others. An initial five meetings are planned.  Then the bank will analyze the findings and begin work on ways and means it can implement the committee's recommendations.  The FBDB is a federal Crown corporation that promotes the creation and development of businesses in Canada.  Especially small and medium-sized businesses.  It provides term loans and loan guarantees, venture capital and a broad range of management training.
